There are many methods applicable for sterilizing process,
such as heating sterilizing, chemical sterilizing and ozone
sterilizing, etc. Among these methods, the process applying
ultraviolet rays to sterilize becomes more outstanding because
of its effectiveness to all kinds of bacteria, small risk
of causing the objects to deteriorate, as well as the low
operating and maintenance costs.
Low-pressure mercury lamp irradiates the ultraviolet lights
of wavelength 254nm, which is almost in agreement with the
wavelength having the best sterilizing effect. The properties
of this wavelength are close to those of the optical absorption
spectrum existing in the microbe's DNA, so it is explained
that the mechanism of applying ultraviolet lights to sterilize
is due to the fact that ultraviolet lights destroy DNA.
■Ultraviolet lights have displayed their superpower in all kinds of sterilizing fields.

■Demerits of other sterilization methods
[ Thermal sterilization ]
●It is not suitable for thermoresistant bacteria.
●It may cause the transformations on the sterilized object.
●The cost is high in energy.
●Bacteria are carried easily because of the existence of the cooling process
[ Chemical sterilization ]
●Secondary treatment is necessary because of the existence of the residual chemicals.
●There is the possibility of generating the resistant bacteria.
[ Ozone sterilization ]
●It is harmful to people's health.
●Too much time is spent because of the low density.
●Metal erosion is caused easily by oxidization.
●It is necessary to take a long time to sterilize the thermoresistant bacteria and fungus.
■Merits of ultraviolet sterilization
[ Merit 1 ] It is applicable for all kinds of bacteria.
[ Merit 2 ] The possibility of causing the bacteria to transform is very low.
[ Merit 3 ] Equipments are simplified and thus maintenance cost spent on them is low.
[ Merit 4 ] Due to the secondary treatment unnecessary, the sterilization process is simplified. Consequently, the operation time is shortened and the cost is reduced.
[ Merit 5 ] Sterilization can be performed under the normal temperature.
[ Merit 6 ] Resistant bacteria cannot be generated. |
